Refrigerant regulations are changing in 2025. Len The Plumber Heating & Air aims to help you understand how this affects you as a homeowner in New Jersey.
With the American Innovation and Manufacturing Act of 2020, R-410A will no longer be manufactured or imported to the U.S. to phase down hydrofluorocarbons.
This particular refrigerant is used in air conditioners, ductless mini-splits, and heat pumps and has been used in place of R-22. However, HVAC systems will be required to stay under a new global warming potential limit, and R-410A doesn’t meet the requirements.
Since 2020, HVAC equipment prices have risen significantly, with an average system price increase of almost 100%.
Things like refrigerant regulations and the updated efficiency standards of SEER2 and HSPF2 have had the biggest impact. More accurate testing conditions and stricter standards make it more complicated for HVAC manufacturers.
The goal is a more environmentally friendly industry, but the side effects of these changes are:
R-22 and R-410A are in the A1 refrigerant class. They have a significant environmental impact because they’re ozone-depleting substances. Freon, or R-22, hasn’t been manufactured or imported since 2020. Puron, or R-410A, will no longer be manufactured or imported in 2025.
Beginning in 2025, R-454B, an A2L refrigerant, will be the primary refrigerant used in air conditioning units. This type of refrigerant has a much lower global warming potential than its predecessors and is more energy-efficient.
Service for older units will still be available through the stockpile of Freon and Puron, but those will dwindle over time. Since this is a new change, you’ll likely be able to obtain Puron to service your existing system.
However, things are different if you need a new HVAC unit. This change has a positive impact by reducing your carbon footprint and improving energy efficiency while future-proofing your HVAC systems. We can help you replace your HVAC with an R-454B system.
Once the refrigerant stockpiles of R-22 and R-410A are gone, this will hasten the turnover to new HVAC systems. Rest assured, Len The Plumber Heating & Air will be here to help.
We have financing options available to lessen the impact on your budget as you transfer from the old Freon or Puron HVAC units to the new ones. These systems will positively affect your environment and your home, increasing your property’s value.
