How to Fix Low Water Pressure When You Have a Well System

Posted on: August 29, 2022

Water faucet dripping

Low water pressure is inconvenient and annoying. Unfortunately, water pressure below 40 psi is a common problem for homeowners who get their water supply from a well.

You don’t just have to deal with low water pressure. There are multiple causes of water pressure issues for well systems, but there are also many solutions.

With the right solution, your home’s well can reach ideal water pressure levels between 40 and 60 psi.

Easy Fixes for Low Well Water Pressure

There’s no need to call a plumber for some of these easy fixes, but the following tips can help you identify and describe the issues you’re experiencing if you prefer to hire a professional.

Clean Clogged Faucets & Fixtures

Over time, faucets and fixtures get clogged with sediment and mineral deposit buildup. Mineral deposits look like chalky white formulations and are difficult to remove.

Aerators on your faucets have a mesh layer that makes it easy for sediment and minerals to stick around. Clean them by:

  • Removing the aerators from your faucets with a wrench
  • Washing the aerator with water
  • Returning the aerator to the faucet

Adjust Your Pressure Switch

Follow these steps to adjust your pressure switch and increase your home’s water pressure:

  1. Turn off the circuit dedicated to the well pump.
  2. Test the air fill valve with an air pressure gauge and see where your pressure lies.
  3. If the water pressure is floating around 40 psi or below, increase it by adjusting the pressure switch. This is located on the pipe connecting the well and pressure tank.
  4. Turn on the circuit and test out the water by opening a faucet.
  5. Readjust if necessary by repeating these steps.

Clear Clogged Water Lines

If clogged faucets and fixtures aren’t the issue, then sediment and mineral buildup may be disrupting your water pressure.

Leave it to the professionals to have your water supply pipes inspected and cleaned to resolve this issue.

Install a Water Softener

Hard water is a term used to describe water with a mineral buildup. A water softener eliminates minerals in hard water before it gets to your pipes.

Installing a point-of-entry water softener directly to your well tank reduces hard water for your entire home.

Install a Water Pressure Regulator

There are generally two types of water pressure regulators:

  • Booster pumps increase a home’s overall water pressure. Installing a booster pump is ideal if your home’s water pressure is consistently below 30 psi.
  • Constant pressure systems keep water pressure consistent while water demand changes. This type of system is an ideal choice if your home’s water pressure shifts throughout the day.

A licensed plumber can measure your water pressure and flow rate to determine which system type is right for you.

Plumbing Infrastructure Issues That Could Cause Low Water Pressure

Low water pressure in well water systems is sometimes caused by plumbing infrastructure that you’ll need to replace if you want higher water pressure in your home.

  • Damaged pressure tank: If your pressure tank has a leak, it will create low water pressure. You’ll need to replace the tank if it’s damaged.
  • Aging well pump: Well pumps generally last around eight to 15 years, depending on how often they’re used. If your well pump is more than 15 years old, you should consider a replacement.
  • Narrow pipes: Even if your home has a high psi, you won’t be able to achieve high water pressure if your pipes are too narrow. They should be half an inch, three-fourths of an inch, or 1 inch in diameter.
