Trainer, The Master Trades Group
Getting to Know Mike
Michael Vettas brings more than 30 years of experience in the plumbing, HVAC, and electrical trades, along with a deep passion for developing the nextgeneration of skilled technicians. Today, he serves as a Training Manager at Len The Plumber Heating & Air, where he focuses on coaching, mentoring, and building the technical and soft-skill foundations that help technicians deliver exceptional service.
Starting From The Ground Up
Michael’s journey into the trades began early in life. After losing his father at age eighteen and stepping into the role of supporting his family, he started his career from the ground up—literally—digging ditches. From there, he moved through new construction, residential service, and commercial service before transitioning into management roles, including branch manager, regional manager, and eventually director of Len The Plumber Academy. That path gave him a unique perspective: decades of hands-on experience combined with a deep understanding of leadership, training, and customer service.
Over the course of his career, Michael has held only three jobs, with more than 15 years spent at Len The Plumber Heating & Air. He has been part of the company’s expansion from a small Baltimore-based team into multiple markets across Maryland, Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and beyond. He credits much of that growth to strong leadership, meaningful mentorship, and a company culture rooted in core values that support both professional and personal growth.
Master Plumber Licenses
Michael holds seven master plumber licenses, including Maryland (Baltimore City and WSSC), Montgomery County, Northern Virginia, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. He describes these credentials as a lifetime’s worth of knowledge carried in a single toolbox—a culmination of long days, missed dinners, and thousands of customer visits that shaped him into both a tradesman and a coach.
Community Service
Some of Michael’s most memorable work has come from moments of service to the community. Early in his career at Len The Plumber, he volunteered during a major flood in Dundalk, helping replace multiple water heaters for families who had lost nearly everything. Those experiences helped shape his belief that the trades are essential to public health, safety, and dignity. As he often says, the sanitation of the nation rests on the shoulders of plumbers and other skilled tradespeople, and society would crumble without the work they do every day.
COVID-19 Challenges
His career also includes navigating challenging moments, including leading teams through the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic. Ensuring the safety of employees and customers while maintaining essential services was one of the toughest periods of his professional life, but also one of the most meaningful. Now, in his role on the training and development team, Michael is contributing to what he considers one of the most important initiatives in the company: building a scalable, future-focused training program that supports technicians, managers, and new hires across all service areas.
Teaching The Next Generation
Today, Michael spends much of his time traveling to different branches, coaching classes of 15 to 25 technicians, creating new curriculum, and developing onboarding programs for both technicians and managers. While he embraces new technology—including the evolving role of AI in training—he still believes deeply in the value of in-person coaching and real human connection. He focuses heavily on soft skills such as communication, trust-building, and understanding a customer’s needs, which he believes are just as important as technical knowledge.
Personal Life
Outside of work, Michael is happiest outdoors. Whether he’s on the water or in the woods, he’s usually boating, jet skiing, scuba diving, fishing, hunting, camping, riding ATVs, or exploring new places. As he likes to say, in the summertime you’ll find him on the water, and in the wintertime you’ll find him in the woods. He and his wife recently celebrated 20 years of marriage, and while she prefers “glamping” with heat and electricity, Michael is always up for getting muddy in the wilderness.
Overarching Philosophy
With decades of field experience, a passion for people, and a commitment to elevating the trades, Michael sees his work as far more than technical problem-solving. For him, it’s about building confidence, shaping careers, and helping technicians realize the true value they bring to every home they visit. As he often tells the people he coaches, their knowledge is priceless—and the industry’s future depends on them.
