Think about all of the gorgeous bathrooms you’ve seen throughout your life and what they all have in common — they’re big and bright! When it comes to the bathrooms in your home, they might not be the biggest or the brightest. While you can’t always make the bathroom bigger, there are a few different ways you can make it brighter (or at least make it appear so).
Using dark paint colors will make bathrooms of any size look infinitely smaller because they absorb light rather than reflect it. Instead, opt for bright colors like any shade of white or even a light-colored yellow or blue. This is also a great excuse to tear down any dreadful wallpaper you might have from the 90s that isn’t just making your bathroom feel smaller, but making it look dated as well.
Having a light colored bathroom will allow light to reflect off of it, but you need to have an adequate amount of light in the first place. The more natural light there is, the better. However, adding windows and skylights aren’t the most cost-effective so you might have to settle for adding more light fixtures. To get the most light in your bathroom without it feeling overwhelming, install multiple light sources. Add in recessed ceiling lighting, wall sconces, and even a small chandelier as a statement and focal piece.
Every bathroom needs a mirror so you can properly get ready each day, but mirrors serve more than just one purpose. Not only do you need them to help groom yourself, but also to reflect light sources (more effectively than light colored paint). Consider replacing your small medicine cabinet mirror with an extra tall and wide one or add another full length one in a different area of the room.
Making your dark bathroom brighter can make the room seem bigger, more appealing, and provides you with an excuse to do that small remodel you’ve always wanted. While the appearance of your bathroom is important, making sure the plumbing and its fixtures aren’t leaking is even more important.
