Hydronic Heating FAQs
What is a hydronic heating system?
Hydronic heating systems pump heated water from a boiler through plastic piping to a plumbing manifold center (a control center used to distribute water throughout the home). The heated water flows from the manifold to the different heating zones in your home depending on the set temperature. Hydronic heating systems may be set up to work with radiant floor heating systems, baseboard heating, or traditional radiators that bring the heated water to floors, radiators, or baseboards throughout the home. Hydronic heating creates much more even and steady temperatures throughout a home when compared to forced-air heating.
Is hydronic heating efficient?
Hydronic heating is incredibly efficient. Water conducts heat much more efficiently than air, so it takes less energy for heat to radiate throughout your home versus being forced through air ducts. Furthermore, the heat produced through furnaces, heat pumps, and other forced-air heating systems can result in hot and cool spots due to imperfect air circulation. Plus, hot air rises, so a lot of the warm air never reaches the people in your home who want to feel it. Radiant heat (via hydronic heating systems) is much more even, resulting in higher efficiency and improved comfort.
