What Is Your Sewer Line?
Many homeowners don’t know the difference between their drain pipes, sewer line, and water line—and with fairly good reason. You don’t need to know a whole lot about your home’s plumbing systems until you have a problem! The water line is easy to understand—it’s what brings water into your home from either a public water system or a private well.
In your home, each plumbing fixture has a drain—your sinks, tubs, showers, and toilets all have drain pipes to get the water out of your home. All of these drain pipes feed into one main sewer line that carries water and waste out of your house and toward the street, where your home’s sewer line meets the public water treatment system. Because your sewer line is connected to every drain in your home, major backups occur when the line is clogged or damaged.
Signs of a Broken Sewer Pipe
Not sure if you’re dealing with a simple clogged drain or a more serious main sewer line issue? It’s an important distinction—and one that can help you avoid costly damage if caught early.
A single slow drain or occasional toilet clog usually points to a localized issue within that specific fixture. But if you’re experiencing backups or blockages in multiple areas of your home, especially at the lowest plumbing fixtures (like basement floor drains, laundry rooms, or lower-level bathrooms), it’s a strong indication of a sewer line problem.
Ask yourself the following questions:
- Does water back up in a different area when you run water elsewhere? For example, if flushing a toilet causes water to rise in the shower drain or floor drain, your main sewer line may be blocked.
- Are multiple drains slow or clogged at the same time—especially in the basement or lowest level? If more than one fixture is affected, this usually signals a clog or break in your sewer main, not just a typical pipe blockage.
- Do you smell strong sewage odors inside or outside your home? A persistent sewer smell is often a red flag that there’s a crack or blockage in your sewer pipe allowing gases to escape.
- Have you noticed standing water or soggy patches in your yard? A leaking or broken sewer pipe underground can cause wet spots, sinkholes, or unusually lush patches of grass due to nutrient-rich wastewater seeping into the soil.
- Are you hearing gurgling sounds in your drains or toilets? Gurgling noises are a sign of trapped air in your plumbing system, often caused by a sewer line obstruction.
If you answered “yes” to any of these, there’s a good chance your home’s main sewer line is damaged or clogged. It’s important to have a professional plumber inspect the line as soon as possible. We offer advanced diagnostics, including video camera inspections, to pinpoint the exact cause of the problem and recommend the right repair solution.

Please note that main sewer line clogs are an emergency, as running any water in your home will cause water and sewer backups to get worse.

Is Sewer Line Replacement Covered by Homeowners Insurance?
Many homeowners are surprised to learn that they are responsible for their sewer lines up to the property line—typically, you must handle sewer line issues that occur anywhere from your home to the main sewer line under the street. Check your home’s policy for confirmation, but generally homeowners are responsible for the cost of the actual pipe replacement and trench digging (and labor associated with it). Some homeowners policies will cover damage caused by the problem, but not the problem itself.
Can I Replace a Sewer Pipe Without Trench Digging?
In many cases, yes! As long as your sewer pipe isn’t completely collapsed or sagging, you can opt for trenchless sewer replacement. With this method, a cable is inserted into the damaged sewer line to pull the new sewer line into position. This bursts the old pipe while putting the new one in its place without trench digging or damage to your property. The only digging needed is for small access holes—otherwise, you’ll hardly be able to tell that the work was done.
